According to the data from Centers of Disease Control & Prevention (US), National Current Asthma Prevalence (2019) is shown as Children (Age less than 18 years) is 5,104,410 and Adults (Age 18+ years) is 20,026,722. Which is 7.8% of entire US population

AeroLiv - Intro

In the actual world, people with Asthma or COPD patients have a strict routine to be followed to keep themselves ready for different allergic situations. And the routine includes medication intake, exercise, etc. But how do these people track them normally?

There is something called an Action Plan for each individual, this is more like a curated set of instructions given by a pulmonologist based on the patient’s condition. Along with an action plan there are several templates that patient’s need to fill out so that their pulmonologist would know the actual journey and reports for a specific time period during each visit.

To save people from these tedious tasks, TMI plans to introduce AeroLiv, a mobile app that allows patients with Asthma & COPD to update their action plan on the app and helps them with medication reminders, medication logs and custom medication reports they can share with their pulmonologists.

Few sample templates Asthma/COPD patients normally fill out.

what exactly is Asthma & COPD?

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are lung diseases. Both cause swelling in your airways that makes it hard to breathe. With asthma, the swelling is often triggered by something you’re allergic to, like pollen or mold, or by physical activity. COPD is the name given to a group of lung diseases that include emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Emphysema happens when the tiny sacs in your lungs (called alveoli) are damaged. Chronic bronchitis is when the tubes that carry air to your lungs (bronchial tubes) get inflamed. Smoking is the most common cause of those conditions (and COPD).

Asthma gets better. Symptoms can come and go, and you may be symptom-free for a long time. With COPD, symptoms are constant and get worse over time, even with treatment.

few facts from research

  • People can have Asthma since childhood or by birth due to genetic disorder.
  • Asthma is triggered by something you’re allergic to, like pollen or mold, or by physical activity, etc.
  • COPD is most commonly seen in people who smoke or exposed to smoke.
  • There are cases where a person is affected with both Asthma & COPD at once, usually referred as Asthma-COPD Overlap (ACO).
  • First symptoms for COPD are mostly seen in adults above 40 yrs of age, it’s not impossible for young adults to have COPD but its quite rare.

design approach

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to cooking. Similarly, there isn't a single solution for every situation. We need a proper design approach for the provided problem statement in order to get the right solution. The procedure for delivering the design solution has been defined as follows.

Design Approach

This includes…

  • Constant collaboration, shareout and feedback with Product team
  • Rapid and iterative prototyping to aid Development efforts
  • Daily scrum to align with cross platform teams

Target Audience

  • Adults(18-60) with Asthma & COPD conditions
  • Adults(18-60) who seeks to get daily medication reminders

User Interviews

Coming to the user interviews, Trudell's team of project management assisted us in scheduling interviews with their real customers. The results of these interviews were really credible, and they aided us in developing the best design solutions for these specific target segments with which we were unfamiliar.

Interview Questions

On the way, we got swamped with questions. Fortunately, we had these questions prepared for interviews, which aided us in connecting with the topic and meeting the objectives of both our target audience and the product owners.

design constraints

  • Brand color which is a shade of Red must be used in UI and it should not leave user with seriousness or frustration while using app.
  • Simplifying experience for filling out lengthy and critical forms that must be filled by user while setting up action plan.

ideation & design

The voyage was quite a roller coaster, but we made it through with the support of various research techniques and brainstormed several ideas to make the application seamless for our targets who've already hit the age of half a century.
